Mae cloddio wedi bod yn rhan annatod o Brydain am 4,000 o flynyddoedd a rhagor. Yn y gyfrol hon mae Geoff Coyle yn edrych ar y modd y mae cloddio wedi llunio Prydain a thirwedd y gwledydd hynny, gan edrych yn benodol ar ei effaith ar hanes cymdeithasol a bywydau'r bobl. Mae hefyd yn ystyried y sefyllfa bresennol a dyfodol y diwydiant ym Mhrydain.

Mining has had a profound impact upon Britain for over 4,000 years. Geoff Coyle explores how mining has shaped Britain and its landscape, emphasising the impact on social history, and the lives of the mining people. He also considers the present state of mining and its future in Britain.
In this thoroughly researched and abundantly illustrated book, the author gives an account of how mining shaped Britain and, while much space is devoted to coal, Coyle also devotes chapters to copper, slate, lead, gold and precious stones. Importantly, we are given accounts of the results of accidents and the sometimes considerable loss of life that followed. ‘The Aberfan disaster was so horrific that most people who lived through that time still recall what they were doing when the news first broke,’ writes the author.

Mining in various parts of Britain is dealt with here, and Wales is well represented, from the Parys copper mines on Anglesey to the lead mines of Flintshire. A separate chapter deals with mine owners. In Bronze Age Britain, these individuals were tribal leaders; in the eighteenth century, they were wealthy businessmen with an eye for the main chance.

The Riches Beneath Our Feet deserves the widest possible readership.
