Addasiad Evangeline Walton o'r Mabinogi.

The Mabinogion is universally recognised as the world's finest arc of Celtic mythology; Walton's vivid retelling introduces a world of gods and monsters, heroes, kings and quests, making accessible one of the greatest fantasy sagas of all time.
The Mabinogion is a mammoth achievement, a quite exceptional compendium of Welsh mythology. I can only imagine the huge amount of research that Walton must have done in order to have made this book so relevant to the period of Welsh history on which these legends are based. She writes: 'Even nowadays there is nothing so laughable as a new idea. Neither has anyone but myself ever suggested that the tribes of Gwynedd and Dyved were of different races. But Pryderi, succeeding his father Pwyll on the throne of Dyved, shows us that fatherhood must have been an acknowledged and accepted fact there, while in Gwynedd the Pictish custom of the mother-right still prevailed. So it seems valid to picture the strife between the two kingdoms as part of the great prehistoric struggle in the Isle of Britain, the Celtic later invaders being fiercely resented by the Picts or Prydyn, the earlier lords of the island.' What a fascinating narrative!

For those of us who are addicted to fantasy, this tome may be considered in the same light as the works of Tolkien or even Swift. It could be thought strange that it took an American from Indiana to accomplish such a project. It seems that from a young age and in poor health Walton found an empathy with the Welsh folk-culture and was continuously inspired by the Mabinogion.

Once transported into the wizardry and magical world of the beautiful Rhiannon, the Wizard-prince Gwydion, and other characters such as the magnificent Pwyll, there is little doubt that the enthusiast will read The Mabinogion over and over, for such an epic can not be fully digested in the first instance.
