Cyflwyniad cynhwysfawr i nofelau José Saramago, un o awduron amlycaf Portiwgal. Mae'r gyfrol yn archwilio ei ffuglen hanesyddol, a'i weithiau alegorïol mwy diweddar. Edrychir ar gynnwys cysyniadol ac ar y modd y defnyddiwyd traddodiadau llenyddol a diwylliannol Portiwgal.

A comprehensive introduction for the English-speaking reader to the novels of Portugal's best-known literary figure, José Saramago. The book covers both his acclaimed historically-based fictions and his more recent, allegorical works. Attention is paid to questions of ideological content, and the exploitation of specifically Portuguese literary and cultural traditions.
Bywgraffiad Awdur:
David Frier is Senior Lecturer in Portuguese at the University of Leeds. He is a leading authority on Portuguese literature and the author of Visions of the Self in the Novels of Camilo Castelo Branco (1850-1870). Formerly Visiting Professor of Portuguese at the University of California at Los Angeles; Visiting Professor of Portuguese at the University of California at Santa Barbara; Lecturer in Portuguese and Spanish at the University of Edinburgh.
Gwybodaeth Bellach:
In this pioneering study of Saramago's work, David Frier provides a comprehensive introduction for the English-speaking reader to the novels of Portugal's best-known literary figure. José Saramago was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1998, the first writer in Portuguese to receive the world's most prized literary award. His works have been translated into twenty-five languages.

The book covers both his acclaimed historically-based fictions and his more recent, allegorical works, demonstrating the continuity of thought and image between these two phases of the writer's career. Particular attention is paid to questions of ideological content, the exploitation of specifically Portuguese literary and cultural traditions, and the novelist's place within the context of world literature. Frier makes a significant contribution to deepening general understanding of the author’s writing in term of its literary background, its socio-political significance, and its reflections on the human condition.

The Novels of José Saramago - Echoes from the Past, Pathways into the Future will be recommended reading for scholars of the work of José Saramago, for students of Hispanic Studies and for anyone interested in contemporary Portuguese literature.

‘David Frier has done a great service to the field by publishing the first book in English on Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago. Frier has written a highly readable and engaging analysis of an author who has long deserved a critical volume in English. His book provides a sensitive and comprehensive reading of Saramago’s major novels and is a necessary reference for anyone who studies or teaches his works.’
