Llyfr sy'n bwrw golwg ar hanes stiwdio Rockfield yn sir Fynwy. Y stiwdio enwog hon oedd y gyntaf i gynnig gwasanaethau preswyl ar gyfer recordio. Dros y blynyddoedd fe'i defnyddiwyd gan nifer o bobl enwog: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Robert Plant, Ian Gillan, Rush, Queen, Oasis, The Stone Roses, a Simple Minds. Cyhoeddwyd gyntaf ym mis Medi 2007.

This book looks at the history of the Rockfield Studios, the famous (and the first) residential recording studio situated in rural Monmouthshire. Over the years it has played host to a number of legendary names: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Robert Plant, Ian Gillan, Rush, Queen, Oasis, The Stone Roses, Simple Minds. First published September 2007.
Just outside Monmouth, deep in the Welsh countryside, lies the legendary Rockfield – ‘the world’s first ever residential studio’, ‘one of the most successful and bizarre studios in the world’, ‘the Holy Grail of recording studios’. Some of rock’s most enduring classics were recorded there: Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, Motorhead’s ‘Ace of Spades’, Dave Edmunds’s ‘I Hear You Knocking’ and Ace’s ‘How Long’, to name just a few you’ll still hear regularly on the radio. And the legendary names associated with the place are legion – Black Sabbath, Robert Plant, Oasis, The Pogues, Rush, Stone Roses, Annie Lennox, Judas Priest, and on and on and on.

In a book full of anecdotes and fun, Collins lays down the history of Rockfield from its makeshift beginnings to state-of-the-art recording studio, using interviews with many of the great musicians and producers who have worked there to explore what it is that has made Rockfield so lastingly unique and inspirational. Initially, a lot of it was down to the nature of the place, which was, until relatively recently, a working farm as well as a recording studio. Bands might be asked to help round up the cattle or bring in the hay. They could go walking, fishing, horse-riding and clay-pigeon shooting in the surrounding countryside. They could mosey into Monmouth for a pint at the pub. They were away from the stresses of urban life and the touring circuit. Because it was residential, they had a chance to bond (or, occasionally, break up) and to work to their own rhythms, which usually meant sleeping late, enjoying the countryside during the day and then working into the small hours of the morning. There were football matches and food fights, childish pranks with fire extinguishers and some serious, drug-fuelled hell-raising. There was also a huge amount of creativity.

Rockfield continues to thrive 7#150; because of its fine recording facilities, because of its location, because of its history. It’s wonderful to have that history recorded, especially with so much of it coming straight from the horses’ mouths.

Rock Legends at Rockfield takes a look at the making of some of rock music’s greatest albums and famous bands who have recorded at one of the most successful and bizarre studios in the world.
When buying records as a youth, the author, Jeff Collins, was fascinated to discover that so many classic albums had been made just down the road from his home in Cardiff. Black Sabbath, Robert Plant, Ian Gillan, Rush, Motorhead, Queen, Judas Priest, Hawkwind, Budgie, (and later), The Stone Roses, Oasis, The Darkness, Kasabian...the list is almost endless. This book is a personal journey to discover what made all these legendary artists choose Rockfield Studios in Wales: a farm turned into a studio, where amazingly surreal and strange happenings occur alongside the mundane routine of day-to-day recording.
Through a series of interviews, the author records eye witness accounts to portray the behind-the-scenes stories from bands recording at the world’s first ever residential studio. Some accounts are from the musicians themselves, including Lemmy and Robert Plant, at other times, told by those a step or two removed, such as roadies, producers and photographers. The book also tells the tales behind the recording of such modern classics as Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and Definitely Maybe… by Oasis.
Fans will discover previously untold anecdotes in this funny and readable book. It will appeal to anyone interested in the making of legendary classic rock music.
