Llyfr am Sieffre o Fynwy, clerigwr o'r ddeuddegfed ganrif a gyfansoddodd 'hanes' manwl a pharhaus Ynys Prydain o'i chychwyn hyd at goncwest yr Eingl-Sacsoniaid. Bu ei weithiau yn hynod o boblogaidd drwy orllewin Ewrop, ac iddo y perthyn yr anrhydedd o oleuo cynulleidfa ehanghach ynghylch hanes Prydain ac Arthur yn arbennig.

A book about Geoffrey of Monmouth, a twelfth-century cleric who was the first person to compose a detailed and continuous history of Britain from its origins to the domination of the Anglo-Saxons. His writings were enormously popular throughout the western European world, and he is justly credited with bringing 'The Matter of Britain' (including Arthur) to a much wider audience.
Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History of the Kings of Britain became one of the most popular texts during the Middle Ages. It presented, for the first time, the detailed story of the British people, introducing Arthur and Merlin into the narrative. It also appears to have provided Shakespeare with the ideas which he put to good use when he wrote King Lear.

But Geoffrey has always presented a challenge to academic researchers due to his bold invention of what he presented as facts. But Karen Jankulak clearly feels that this does not detract from the merits of his work. I was fascinated to learn that Gerald of Wales was far from flattering about Geoffrey. He related with relish the story of a prophet who could keep demons away providing that he had a copy of St. John’s Gospel placed on his lap. But Gerald was convinced that if Geoffrey’s book was lying on his lap the demons would return in force.

After many years as a secular canon at Oxford he was ordained priest and consecrated bishop of St. Asaph in 1152. But as St. Asaph was in Welsh hands, and he was a Norman nominee he did not, as far as we know, ever visit the diocese. On the face of it, this seems very strange.

This is a worthy addition to the splendid Writers of Wales series and anyone with an interest in Welsh History, and literature indeed, could do worse than have it on their shelves.

Gwybodaeth Bellach:
Geoffrey of Monmouth, a twelfth-century cleric, was the first person to compose a detailed and continuous history of Britain from its origins to the domination of the Anglo-Saxons. His writings were enormously popular throughout the western European world, and he is justly credited with bringing 'The Matter of Britain' (including, most notably, the figure of Arthur) to a much wider audience. The vast popularity of this material has persisted to the present day, mainly but not solely in the interest shown in 'King Arthur'. This book illustrates the close ties between Geoffrey's notion of British and Arthurian society and other materials from medieval Wales and Ireland.
