Mae pob dysgwyr yn gwybod nad ydyn nhwn eich dysgu chi sut i ddweud pethau fel poeri yn y llwch mewn gwersi Cymraeg. Dyma un rheswm fod Y Gŵr o Phoenix, gan Bob Eynon, yn nofel mor dda. Mae 63 tudalen yn y nofel ac mae'n addas ar gyfer pobl sydd wedi gwneud Cwrs WLPAN (ar bob lefel), Pellach neu Uwch.

Mae Y Gŵr o Phoenix wedii lleoli yn y Gorllewin Gwyllt. Mae'n adrodd stori Sin Watt, sy'n adnabyddus hefyd fel Mellten. Saethodd Sin ddau ddyn ar l gm gardiau mewn salŵn yn Phoenix a chafodd ei garcharu am hynny. Ond mae'n dianc ac yn anelu at y Graig Wen, i ladd y siryf Bob Clarke.

Ar y ffordd, cyfarfu Sin Pedro Gonzalez, ysbeiliwr medrus, a Jim Daniels, a fyddain gwneud unrhyw beth am bres. Pan mae Sin yn cyrraedd y Graig Wen, mae e'n aros mewn llety sy'n perthyn i ferch dlos or new Maria Grant.

Fe wnes i fwynhaur llyfr hwn achos fod y stori yn symud ymlaen yn gyflym. Mae geiriau newydd yn cael eu hailddefnyddio o leiaf ddwywaith neu dair ymhob pennod. Felly, o'n i'n treulio llai o amser yn chwilio am eirfa yn y cefn. Mae'r eirfa hon yn gynhwysfawr a dwi ddim yn credu y dylai fod ar neb angen Geiriadur Cymraeg-Saesneg o gwbl. Mae'r llyfr hwn yn gymorth defnyddiol iawn i ddysgwyr a dwi'n ei gymeradwyo i bob dysgwr.

As all Welsh learners will appreciate, they don't teach you how to say things like spit in the dust in Welsh class, and this is one of the reasons why Y Gŵr o Phoenix (the Man from Phoenix), by Bob Eynon, is a fantastic novelette of 63 pages for Welsh learners who have covered some of the fundamentals of Welsh (e.g. WLPAN level).

Y Gŵr o Phoenix, set in the Wild West, tells the story of Sin Watt, otherwise known as Mellten (Lightning), a 'Wanted Dead or Alive' type of cowboy imprisoned for murdering two men in a saloon in Phoenix who accused him of cheating in a card game. Sin escapes intending to kill Sheriff Clarke for previously arresting him. Along the way, Sin meets up with Pedro Gonzalez, a highly feared bandit (who, naturally, speaks excellent Welsh, although occasionally lapses into Spanish for dramatic effect), and the notorious Jim Daniels, who will do anything, including murder, for the right fee. No Western would be complete without a love interest, and Sin finds his in Maria Grant, who helps to run the guesthouse where Sin stays after escaping.

One of the strengths of this book is the way in which vocabulary is repeated. For example, I found it rewarding that unrecognized words could be looked up once and then found later (often two or three times) in the following few sentences or paragraphs. The newly-learned word was still fresh in the mind by the time it reappeared, resulting in less of the customary flicking back and forth between the story and the Welsh-English vocabulary at the back. This is a big confidence-builder and helps the novel to flow for the learning reader, making it more enjoyable to read (well, as enjoyable as a Western can be) as opposed to being an exercise in learning Welsh.

The Welsh-English vocabulary at the back is comprehensive enough that most learners are unlikely to require an English-Welsh Dictionary. I recommend this book to any learner and I will certainly be sampling other of the numerous works for learners by Bob Eynon.
