English review below

Dyma gyfrol sy’n crynhoi hanes ‘prif emynydd Cymru’, sef William Williams, Pantycelyn. Fe’i cyhoeddwyd fel rhan o’r gyfres ‘Cip ar Gymru’, ac fel a nodir ar y clawr, mae’n llyfr addas ar gyfer pob oedran.

Mae’r prif ffeithiau i gyd wedi eu cyflwyno yma, a hynny mewn modd uniongyrchol a syml, ac ar yr un pryd yn fywiog ac yn ddiddorol. Cawn ddarllen am fywyd cynnar Pantycelyn a’r modd y daeth o dan ddylanwad y diwygiwr Howel Harris, ac am ei deithiau niferus o amgylch y wlad yn pregethu ac yn gwerthu ei lyfrau emynau. Cawn ddarllen hefyd am brif fwriad Pantycelyn wrth ysgrifennu ei gasgliad o dros fil o emynau, sef, yn syml, mwynhau addoli Duw, a thrwy hynny geisio cyffwrdd â chynifer o bobl ag y gallai trwy werthu ei waith. Ac fe wnaeth hynny, wrth gwrs. Mae’r ‘profiadau personol ysgytwol’, y ‘ddelweddaeth gyfoethog fyw’, y ‘cyferbyniadau grymus’ a’i ‘feistrolaeth lwyr ar odl’, i gyd yn dod at ei gilydd i greu ‘barddoniaeth wirioneddol fawr’. Fe gawn ein hatgoffa hefyd nad ysgrifennu emynau yn unig a wnâi Pantycelyn. Fe ysgrifennodd nifer o lyfrau ar bynciau megis gwyddoniaeth a chrefydd fyd-eang.

Dengys yr awdur y cyswllt hollbwysig sydd rhwng yr emynydd â llenorion a dramodwyr ein cyfnod ni. Yn wir, gwaith Pantycelyn fu’r prif ddylanwad ar Saunders Lewis wrth iddo ysgrifennu ei nofel enwog Monica, ‘prawf sicr o apêl parhaol’ gwaith Pantycelyn i’r ‘synhwyrau a’r meddylfryd modern’.

Llyfr dwyieithog yw hwn, ac fe gaiff y cyfan ei gyflwyno ochr yn ochr â lluniau lliwgar sy’n ychwanegu at y mwynhad. Gyda’i glawr atyniadol a’i gynnwys difyr yn llawn gwybodaeth a ffeithiau, dyma gyfrol werthfawr a buddiol i unrhyw un sydd am gael eu hatgoffa, neu am ddysgu o’r newydd, am hanes y ffigwr allweddol hwn yn hanes Cymru.

* * *

This is a book which summarizes the life and work of ‘Wales’s premier hymn writer’ – William Williams, Pantycelyn. Published as part of the ‘Wonder Wales’ series, it is ideal for all ages.

The main facts are all included here, and the style is simple and direct, while at the same time lively and interesting. A brief account of Pantycelyn’s early years and the way in which he came under the influence of one of the great Methodist Revival leaders, Howel Harris, is followed by a discussion on the personal aims and intentions behind his collection of more than a thousand hymns. His main aim was to enjoy worshiping God, and to touch the lives of as many people as he could through the selling of his work. He succeeded, of course, and the ‘direct power of Pantycelyn’s words’, ‘the rich, vivid imagery and the strong contrasts’, and his ‘complete mastery of rhyme’, all combine to form ‘truly great poetry’. He also translated many of his hymns into the English language as well as composing many original hymns in English.

Although he is mainly remembered as a hymn writer, we are reminded that he also wrote extensively on various subjects such as marriage, scientific developments and world religion.

A perfect example of Pantycelyn’s profound influence on Welsh poets and prose writers of our time is found in Saunders Lewis’s novel Monica, ‘a direct link between Pantycelyn and contemporary Wales – and proof of his lasting legacy’.

The book is bilingual, with Welsh and English set side by side on the same page, which is ideal for Welsh learners. Colourful photos are a valuable addition, and often contribute to bringing the story of this notable character to life. With its attractive cover and enjoyable factually rich content, this book is simply a must for those who wish to brush up their knowledge, or for those who wish to learn the basic facts about this key character in the history of Wales.
