A volume including a combination of full-colour photographs of Mary Lloyd Jones's most recent paintings complemented by essays of informed biographical and critical analysis.

The work of the painter Mary Lloyd Jones is rooted in her total commitment to Wales, its history, language and literature. Some of her innovative and very distinctive abstract works combine the visual image and the use of text in a unique way. 'The music of cynghanedd joined to the harmonies and discords of colour has proved a fruitful marriage,' she writes in her illuminating introduction.

This superbly produced book contains 80 full colour reproductions of her most recent work. There are also three essays. The distinguished art specialist Anne Price-Owen and the artist Iwan Bala reflect on many aspects of the work of a painter who they both rank very highly. The concluding essay is entitled ‘Vanished Voices: the Plight of Celtic languages’, the joint authors are a linguist and a psychologist. The essay is entirely appropriate when one considers Mary Lloyd Jones’s love of, and concern for, the language of Wales.

This is certainly a book which all readers with an interest in contemporary Welsh art will wish to own and treasure.
