The avowed intention of this book is 'to provide a brief overview of the Welsh Art scene', which it offers in three distinct ways: an exploratory essay; single or double page presentations of the work of forty-one individual artists; and an index of institutions, art prizes and relevant contact addresses.
Adams writes both knowledgeably and persuasively, presenting a useful account of recent history as well as current pre-occupations within the visual arts. The selected artists represent a cross-section only, and show great diversity of theme and formal concerns, though over two-thirds are men. This may, of course, reflect an over-all gender imbalance.
Adams manages to convey a great deal in a few well-chosen words. Whether or not the reader agrees with his analyses,
they are never less than thought-provoking. Stylistically, he is something of a chameleon, matching image and word with remarkable verbal dexterity. The more mundane lists at the end of the book have a practical application which
recommends it to artists and art enthusiasts alike.
Essentially, this is a personal celebration of the visual arts in Wales, of their creative diversity and future promise. It is also generously, and extremely well, illustrated.
