A collection of critical essays by renowned scholars dealing with various aspects of literature, both poetry and prose, written in English in Wales during the 20th century, including discussions on the work of Dylan Thomas, Margiad Evans, Vernon Watkins and Harri Webb.
Casgliad o draethodau beirniadol gan ysgolheigion cydnabyddedig yn ymwneud ag amryfal agweddau ar lenyddiaeth, yn farddoniaeth a rhyddiaith Saesneg, a ysgrifennwyd yng Nghymru yn ystod yr 20fed ganrif, yn cynnwys trafodaethau ar waith Dylan Thomas, Margiad Evans, Vernon Watkins a Harri Webb.
This yearbook of critical studies, sponsored by the Association for Welsh Writing in English and the Academi, is a publication whose readership is, I would guess, mainly academic. There are twelve contributions. I found the majority of papers, or essays as I would prefer to describe them, interesting, and some indeed made arresting reading.
Tony Curtis offers a valuable contribution on Ceri Richardss art and the poetry of his friend Vernon Watkins. Anyone with an interest in either of these two important figures will certainly wish to read this. Malcolm Ballin surveys the Welsh periodicals in English which appeared in the period from 1880 to 1965. Sally Roberts Jones, whose historical and literary scholarship has been underestimated, contributes a fascinating paper on Elizabeth Davies, an Anglo-Welsh bardd gwlad. Jackie Benjamin takes a fresh look at Under Milk Wood and, it seems to me, her interpretation will have to be taken on board by critics in the future.
But this edition of the yearbook does not confine itself to academic papers as such. Pennar Daviess short story Heartsickness appears in its first English translation, with a brief introduction by Densil Morgan, and Diane Green presents a very useful bibliography of criticism which appeared in 2002 and 2003.
The yearbook has been produced to the highest design standards with a splendid reproduction of Ceri Richardss marvellous work The force that through the green fuse drives the fire on the front cover.
