Fifteen stories on relationships: the nuances of class; exile; sexual exploitation; the civilising influence of women which can extend into interference, and the accommodations made necessary by old age. Voices range across gender, age and ethnicity. The tone of Always the Love of Someone is upbeat: as optimistic in spirit as Mike Leigh's Happy Go Lucky.
Casgliad o bymtheg o straeon byrion gan Huw Lawrence.

Author Biography: Huw Lawrence’s stories have three times won in the Rhys Davies Short Story Competition, have won three Cinnamon Awards and a Bridport prize. He was also a nominee for the 2009 Tom Gallon Prize. Born in Llanelli, Huw trained as a teacher in Swansea, later continuing his education at Manchester and Cornell. He spent some years doing a variety of labouring jobs in Manchester, and in the Ffestiniog area of north Wales. He now lives in Aberystwyth. Further Information: A tramp shares Graham’s lentil soup in dirty pyjamas, in full view of the neighbourhood. Noi is an escapee Thai “bride” who travels from her uncle’s noodle soup shop opposite the toilets on Pattaya Soi 7 to a well-to-do Wiltshire residence before learning just how “different” Britain can be. A lawyer terrified of dogs loses a case and his wife because of an Alsation, while a Deerhound cross brings him self-knowledge.
"Crisp, clear and illuminating." Emyr Humphreys, author of A Toy Epic
"He has his own voice and a range quite unlike anything I have read by a Welsh writer in recent years." Meic Stephens “Stopped me in my tracks ... profound ... revealing ... incisive ... a book to be savoured. Masterful throughout, and each story is as elegant as it is insightful. I will be filing this collection on my bookshelf next to Raymond Carver. [5-star Review]” Ceri Shaw, http://americymru.ning.com |
