Dyma gyfrol fach arall yn y gyfres ‘Cip ar Gymru’, cyfrol ddwyieithog ar gyfer oedolion yn bennaf, efallai, ond a fyddai’n addas i bob oedran.

Gwahanol agweddau ar yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol sydd dan sylw yn y gyfrol hon. Ceir disgrifiad byw a theg iawn o bethau fel y maen nhw heddiw o ran cystadlaethau a bywyd diwylliannol ar y Maes a thu hwnt i’w ffiniau; ceir cip ar hanes yr Eisteddfod a’i datblygiad dros y canrifoedd, gan ddechrau gyda’r eisteddfod gyntaf yng nghastell Aberteifi yn 1176, cyn nodi’r cerrig milltir diweddarach yn hanes yr Eisteddfod (a’i Gorsedd) fesul un. Hoffais yn fawr arddull seml, ond cwbl gyfrifol, y gyfrol fach hon.

Darlunnir y gyfrol mewn modd digon amrywiol: drwy gyfrwng ffotograffau lliw llawn o wahanol olygfeydd Eisteddfodol, gan amlaf, ond cyflwynir yma hefyd luniau gan yr arlunydd William Grant Murray, wyneb-ddalen rhaglen yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol pan gynhaliwyd hi yn Neuadd Albert yn Llundain yn 1909, a llun o ddalen o lawysgrif ‘Brut y Tywysogion’ a ‘Statud Gruffydd ap Cynan’ sy’n sôn am wreiddiau’r Eisteddfod.

Dylai’r gyfrol hon fod yn gaffaeliad i bawb sydd angen gwybodaeth ddiddorol, hylaw am yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol a’i hanes, a bydd yn arbennig o ddefnyddiol i ddysgwyr (ac eraill) sy’n mentro i’r Maes am y tro cyntaf.

The work divides into three main sections. The first part gives an introduction to the present-day festival, showing its huge relevancy to modern Welsh life, and including many interesting facts: 6,000 competitors take part every year; 160,000 people attend the festival; caravan and camping grounds stretch over 110 acres of land; bands such as Catatonia, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci and Super Furries have all played there.

The second section is a historical overview, beginning with the first Eisteddfod, Lord Rhys’s Cardigan Eisteddfod of 1176, following on through the establishing of the Gorsedd of Bards of the Isle of Britain by Iolo Morganwg (a band of poets and musicians who marched in full Druidic regalia through Carmarthen town in 1810 on their first appearance in Wales), and into the twentieth century when Cynan put his own theatrical stamp on the ceremonies.

The third section defines the working of the Eisteddfod and Gorsedd of today, but also mentions local eisteddfodau, as well as the Urdd National Eisteddfod and the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.

For anyone interested in a definition of Wales’s premier festival, this is an excellent booklet.
