There are three stories that converge here: the tale of the London cats escaping to Wales; the tale of the Welsh cats of Tircoed and their unpleasant leader; and the tale of twelve-year-old Iwan whose mother has left home to go away with her lover.
The night-time journey the London cats undertake along the hard shoulder of the M4 is fraught with anxiety; the motorway and its service areas are dangerous places. The cats are desperate to escape from London and expect to arrive in Tircoed to a great welcome.
But the reader knows something the London cats are not aware of: the Tircoed cats have a leader who is not willing to welcome strangers to his home. What will happen when the London cats eventually reach their destination?
Iwan lives in Tircoed. He is not certain how he feels about his mother leaving home. He misses her, but he does not miss the arguments she and his father used to have. But she has given him a great gift: the ability to understand cat language. After hearing the story of the London cats’ journey, Iwan is able to see meaning for himself in their arrival at Tircoed.
The anthropomorphism provides comedy, hinted at on the cover, which gallops along like a Disney cartoon with a good dash of the Carry On films.

Further Information: Cockney cats come running along the M4
Dafydd Wyn, the author of M4 Cats, a new novel for 10-13 year olds, was an English teacher at schools in London, Y Bala and Ystalyfera. Nowadays, during his retirement in Glanaman, Carmarthenshire, he writes literature for children instead of studying it with them. The M4 Cats is his first novel for children.
The story follows the adventures of a group of Cockney cats fleeing from a deadly cat flu virus in London. They travel along the M4, hoping to find refuge in Tircoed in west Wales but the Welsh cats are unsure how to react to their English counterparts. The story also gives us insight into a Welsh family of three children and their single father.
Meinir Wyn Edwards, Y Lolfa, says, “Dafydd Wyn relates to his target audience. He has years of experience of working with children and this is reflected in his use of vivid descriptions, dry humour and distinctive characters, as well as depicting poignant emotions, that will capture his audience’s imagination.”
The author says, “I’ve always made up stories about cats and I’m grateful to Y Lolfa for allowing them to come alive.” |
