Are you nosy? Do you enjoy a treasure hunt? If you do, you will be in your element exploring The Poets House. This is a home chock full of poetic mementoes, an eclectic anthology which ranges from the traditional to the contemporary, and includes familiar favourites, unexpected gems, the brilliant, the banal, the showy, the modest, the essential, and the expendable; the host is generous in her welcome.
Wandering from room to room kitchen, lounge, laboratory and so on you will come across a wide variety of Welsh and Anglo-Welsh lodgers Taliesin, Dylan Thomas, Harry Webb, Gillian Clarke and Gareth Owen to name but a handful and keeping company with a mottley crew of generally less well-known contemporary poets, the majority of whom deserve to become good friends, you will discover the occasional lyricist and pop group.
For this house is full of wonders
That will make you gasp with awe
Or maybe weep some heart-felt tears,
Make you laugh at what you saw.
There is indeed something for everyone in the wonderfully illustrated pages of The Poets House, deservedly short-listed for the Tir na n-Og award.
M. Lorna Herbert Egan
